Intelligent homes to ease seniors’ life

Is domotics easing seniors’ life? Well, of course yes! Domotics, i.e. a set of all technological and automatic systems applied to houses and buildings, represents one of the best innovations to improve and ease our daily life, especially for seniors.

This is true particularly for Italy, which is considered one of the countries with the greatest number of seniors in the world, second only to Japan. It is not a surprise therefore that a Research reported by Institute for innovation and technology in Berlin, ICT enabled independent living for elderly: A status-quo analysis on products and the research landscape in the field of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) in EU-27 (see graphic below), shows that in European Union, Italy is among the countries that buy more Ambient Assisted living products (i.e. intelligent objects in the environment to support people, mostly seniors, in living independently and monitored).

Nowadays, managing their lives at home with the help of technology may sound complicate for seniors but domotics is the solution! With domotics, seniors can obtain their independence, their safety and, above all, an easy-to access support for their daily activities (turning on/off the lights, using principal household appliances, turning on/ off the warming system etc.). But that’s not all. The intelligent and simple management of home provides seniors with the possibility to take care of their health by calling medical support directly in case of necessity, individuate and prevent possible damages (for example, pipes damages, flooding etc.) and solve problems in a totally safe way. 

The importance of making seniors feel more comfortable with smart homes, therefore, is the principal reason at the base of innovative projects like SmartyourHome in the KA2-Field of Erasmus+ programmes, financed by European Commission. In fact, SmartyourHome aims to create a training course and a platform for seniors in order to raise their awareness on smarter technologies.

To conclude, all the benefits of the placement of domotics systems could be seen as the answer to the problem of lacking assistance/ support of seniors in countries like Italy. Smarter homes make smarter, safe and independent seniors!
